Credit Card Frauds: Tops the List of Crimes
Identity theft is the most common form of crime committed today and this is largely due to the free access of technology. On the one hand, if new technology is being developed to make work easier and lighter for people then on the other hand, that same technology is being used by scams and frauds to commit crimes which leaves them virtually untraceable. The advantage that these scammers have is that some amount of valuable time already passes before the victim even realizes that his credit cards have been stolen and reports that theft, giving them ample opportunity to clear away from the scene.
- We use credit cards for better and easier transactions and since the limit in most cards is quite high, the offenders will take the opportunity to carry on all transactions and illegal purchases posing as the innocent victim and leave him to face the charges. With the use of modern technology the offenders have even made it easy to manufacture phony or duplicate cards by stripping the data from the magnetic strips and even overcome such precautions as holograms. And these counterfeit cards are virtually untraceable.
- One of the precautions that you can take while making transactions with your credit card is to sign the panel at the back of the card with a non-removable ink. Also try to keep the transaction amount within the limit the credit card company has allowed to, which would help you to locate over expenditure easier. Be present when the card is being swiped and do not allow it to be taken away from your sight. Check the charge-slip thoroughly before signing it, checking all the details and if necessary sign the bill as well and retain it till the transaction is updated in your credit statement.
- Finding information on the internet on some company’s database is also easy. Many companies may store your personal information if you have had transactions with them in the past and it is too easy for some professional hacker to break into the company’s system. Since you do not have any power to stop that kind of activity, the least you can do is to monitor your own accounts. Keep changing your passwords at regular intervals and try not to carry more than two credit cards at a time.
- If you are unfortunate enough to be a victim of identity theft then your credit rating will be damaged in no time and it may take years to salvage yourself from the damage. And stealing your identity is not an issue with these professional frauds who can get hold of all your personal information by using ingenious methods. They can steal you wallet personally or gather the necessary information from your personal documents which may be carelessly dumped without shredding.
