Protect Yourself from Credit Card Fraud

Credit cards are the easiest way to manage your finance these days. You need not worry about the amount of cash that you have to carry and you do not need to defer the purchase of any commodity because you do not have adequate cash with you. It is the one of the best things that have happened to humanity but like all other things, this too can change from a boon to a curse if you are not careful with it. It can bring you crashing down by allowing scammers to gain unlimited access to your bank account and draining you of all finances.

  • Disadvantages: Credit card frauds are committed to make illegal purchases using another person’s account, with the result that the offender goes unscathed and the innocent is victimized. Unauthorized funds can also be obtained with this method. The disadvantage is that the company issuing the card has no way of knowing that a card has been stolen until and unless it has been reported, giving the offender both the time and scope to withdraw money from another’s account. And although they have 24-hour tele-calling service for prompt reporting, the user may not be aware himself for sometime that his card has been stolen, especially if he is using more than one card. By the time he reports he discovers and reports the theft and the card is blocked, much of the damage has already been done.
  • Safety Measures: The only way of securing a credit card is the signature on the signature panel and that easily be forged. On the other hand, there are very few merchants who demand to see additional verification before any transaction, leaving the offender to escape unscathed. Only few credit cards carry the user’s picture for identification. So the best way of ensuring your card’s safety is to check on it and your account at regular intervals. Sometimes you can key in additional information like your address and the postal code or the zip code, but if your card gets stolen with your entire wallet, then too it would be easy for the scammer to browse through it and gain all the necessary information. For example, the driver’s license too carries all the necessary information.
  • Awareness: The card issuing companies have also come up with protective measures against probable offenders like coming up with software that detects a probable fraud. Merchants and bank people are also been asked to keep a lookout for large transactions a long distance away from the user’s address and if necessary even hold the card and refuse to return it without checking with the card issuing company. Awareness is the only key to stop the offenders from committing scams and frauds.
