Procedures to Follow during a Road Accident Investigation
Rash driving and carelessness of the pedestrians while crossing the road often result in road accidents. Especially on highways, where vehicles run on full speed the accidents are nastier when a collision occurs. Long stretches of highways usually have police check posts only at regular intervals; as a result, investigating a road accident in such cases becomes all the more difficult. There are hardly any eyewitnesses and even if any, they are afraid to come forward and testify regarding what happened.
- Reasons for Accidents: However, accidents can also take place if the vehicle was not maintained properly or there were certain errors during the making or the repairing of the vehicle. In that case, the role of the manufacturers or the mechanics who last repaired the vehicle also come into the scheme of things. So while investigating a road accident, there are some questions that have to be taken into account. They are: how did the accident occur? When did it occur? Were there any casualties or not and lastly what can be done prevent such an accident again.
- Prevention: It can be said with confidence that 75% of the road accidents can be prevented if the drivers maintain and follow the traffic rules. In that case, the proactive method would be to analyze the causes which may cause an accident and take suitable measures beforehand and on the reactive basis, to investigate the reasons which caused the accidents and eliminate them in the attempt to prevent such an incident from occurring again. Awareness among the masses plays the key role in the prevention of accidents. The point is almost everybody are aware of the hazards of rash driving, but only a few remember them when they are out on the road.
- Aspects to be Looked Into: Investigating a road accident can thus prove to be tricky because invariably a any driver would accuse the other driver of rash driving and in case there are no witnesses, determining the offender becomes a challenging task for the investigator. Then there is also the possibility of car accidents frauds and scams, where a scam driver will deliberately knock into another vehicle to claim insurance money. Then if there are any casualties in the accident then it also becomes extremely important to investigate whether it was a homicide staged as an accident to actually murder the victim. Again, there is every possibility that the perpetrator would escape unscathed if the accident was well-staged and if there were not any witnesses. It then becomes the sole responsibility of the investigator to deduct from what he sees in the place of the accident.
