Detectives are a significant part of every childhood. Stories about detectives and their thrilling escapades capture the imagination of every child’s memories. However crime detectives are not just characters of fiction literature. They are an active part of modern life where they provide necessary protection against crime and timely detection of the perpetrators of criminal activities. There are detectives in every police departments of countries across the globe that solve different kinds of crimes based on their instinctive skills of deducing facts from evidence and witness accounts.

Crime Detective Magazines

There have been publications of several detective magazines over the years. There are many authors who have scripted enigmatic and breathtaking detective stories as well as serial publications of the adventures of detective characters. There are well known and famous like Sherlock Holmes and Poirot who have enlivened the dull days of many people.

  • Official Detective Stories – This was an American magazine of detective stories that was popular in the 1930s.
  • The Popular Magazine – From November 1903 to the latter part of the year 1931 this American magazine featured a number of serial fiction literature on a variety of topics among which a popular item was about detective stories and adventures.
  • Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine – This was a compilation of thrilling mystery stories in the year 1941. It was an improvement on the earlier variety of pulp fiction to a digest that created smaller sized trendier magazines.
  • True Detective Mysteries – This name may have been used to herald many detective magazines in the past. There were several pulp fiction covers with this title. The first among these had been an American publication that came out in the year 1924 that had crime stories in it that were true to some extent.
  • Crime and Detective – This magazine from India is a portrayal of several aspects of crime and criminals that have grown in India across the cities and towns.
  • True Crime Library (Online) – This online magazine portal has true crime stories from all over the European and North American continents. The contents are often hair-raising as detectives solve true cases of enormous rarity.

Famous Crime Detectives

It is not a matter of unusual coincidence that people are often fed on a fat diet of detective and mystery stories right from their childhood to more mature years of adulthood. We all have had our favorites starting from Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys in junior school to Hercule Poirot and Sherlock Holmes in later years. There are very few real life detectives that we may be acquainted with owing to the nature of their work even though it is beyond anyone’s doubt that these talented men and women do exist. However here is a brief introduction of all time favorites among crime detectives.

  • Sherlock Holmes (Arthur Conan Doyle) – This is the original and the masterful of them all. This life like portrayal of cases and the procedures of solving them by detective Holmes aided by his friend Dr. Watson is an exemplary literary work.
  • Hercule Poirot (Agatha Christie) – This famous Belgian detective character devised by Agatha Christie solved cases with unique élan as he left his readers and viewers of the televised portrayals enthralled.
  • Jessica Fletcher – This lady was a crime detective of a popular television series called ‘Murder She Wrote’. She solved cases and then went on to write her murder mystery memoirs. Owing to his huge success it has been the longest running televised series that was made in movies four times over.
